UPDATES ON PLANNING ISSUES

The Planning Group, which consisted of Diane Whitfield and myself during the last year, have met monthly to review planning applications published by Trafford Council, and to raise objections where we felt that was appropriate.  We do always welcome comment from members of the Society and the public about issues that make the blood boil!

Since our last newsletter we have objected to the application for several mobile phone masts on the corner ofHale Road andPark Road and these applications were refused by TMBC in April.  The applicants have now got together to reapply for one mast to service all the various companies requirements, but the Society has objected as previously in view of the proliferation of street furniture in this area. However, approval for the revised design has now been granted.

We have also restated our objection to the fixed tables outside Piccolino’s (these have been removed and collapsible tables are currently being used) and the application to reinstate the fixed tables was turned down on 15th June.

Hale Bar & Grill have applied for a certificate of lawfulness for their two standing umbrella tables and three benches installed in contravention of the Planning Inspector’s decision and again we appealed on the grounds of loss of amenity to the local residents.  We are pleased to report that only the benches were approved, so the table part of the umbrellas will have to be removed.

Those of you who attended our meeting at theHale Methodist Church will have realised the strength of feeling amongst local residents against the Church’s proposal for a modern development of flats on theirHale Road site.

While the Society has sympathy with the Church’s financial plight and understands its desire for modern facilities for itself and affordable social housing for those on the housing waiting list, we are unhappy with the style and density of the ultramodern design, which does not fit in with the local street scene and will aggravate the already considerable parking problems onHale Road andOak Road.

As a result of written representations and recommendations to the Church and Great Places Housing Group by our own members and by local residents, revised plans have now been published on the Church website

SHAW'S GREEN NOT FOR SALE

Executive Members voted unanimously on 16th June not to sell Shaw's Green inAltrincham. The decision had been finely balanced, but the weight of objections from residents and the local groups and societies, includingHale Civic Society, tipped it against the developer. Altrincham resident Leslie Cupitt, has put in anapplication to register Shaw's Green as a Town Green under the Commons Act2006.  This would protect it from any development in the future. It is hoped that an impartial and independent Village Green Inspector will assess the application, rather than Trafford Council as the owners of the land.

The developer PAG, will now build the new office block adjacent to Shaw's Green instead of partially on top of it, with the additional car park being put at the back. All the Mott Macdonald staff will still be transferred from Stockport. By March next year, PAG will remove the hoarding, access ramp and hardcore and reinstate the wall and grass, along with planting 5 new replacement trees and some shrubs. This is part of the Lease agreement they have with the Council to use Shaw's Green as a temporary construction site. Altrincham will have its green open space restored to it once more.
